Focusing on the life of Brian Wilson, Love and Mercy features two timelines. One depicts Wilson during his determination to record the greatest album ever made, the critically acclaimed Pet Sounds. The second later timeline depicts a fragile Wilson, who under the care of the therapist Dr. Eugene Landy, struggles to assert himself and gain control.
Paul Dano depicts the younger Wilson, at the height of his creative powers, whilst John Cusack plays the older, broken Wilson. Directed by Bill Pohlad, who produced Malick’s The Tree of Life, Love and Mercy certainly has the capacity to be great. The trailer is fairly conventional, revealing little about the film itself and including the inevitable The Beach Boys’ soundtrack, yet its cast, particularly the inclusion of the brilliant Paul Dano, hint at the the film’s potential.
