Drake Doremus’s debut, Like Crazy, was a wonderful meditation upon the pitfalls of being in love with the concept of your first love. His latest effort, Breathe In, appears to revisit similar themes: the potential damaging aspect of romanticising certain scenarios or situations.
Guy Pearce stars as a high-school music teacher, tempted to drift from his marriage upon the arrival of a British exchange student, played by Felicity Jones. Jones, in reuniting with Doremus, is seemingly becoming somewhat of a muse for the director: her effortless luminosity certainly engages, ensuring that her Anna in Like Crazy, despite her privilege, remained accessible.
The atmospheric, wonderfully shot trailer, coupled with the excellent early reviews at Cannes indicates Doremus’s continuing excellence.
