The latest effort from the sublime Jacques Audiard, Rust and Bone, looks absolutely stunning, beautifully shot and utterly emotive. It is no understatement to say that Audiard is one of the finest current working directors; The Beat That My Heart Skipped and A Prophet both demonstrated a masterclass in depicting the subtlety of human emotions.
Rust and Bone, based on the short story by Craig Davidson, stars the enigmatic Marion Cotillard as Stéphanie, a killer whale trainer, who after a horrific accident, embarks on a relationship with the unemployed boxer Ali (Matthias Schoenaerts). The narrative looks set to effectively juxtapose the raw physicality of Ali’s aggression, with the imposed limitations Stéphanie is set to struggle against.
As ever, with Audiard, I have high hopes.
